Protein May Reduce Hip Fractures in the Elderly

Seniors who consume a higher level of dietary protein are less likely to suffer hip fractures than seniors whose daily dietary protein intake is less, according to a new study by the Institute for Aging Research of Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

The study, which examined the daily protein intake of 946 seniors from the Framingham Osteoporosis Study, found that individuals who were in the lowest 25 percent of dietary protein intake had approximately 50 percent more hip fractures than those who consumed greater amounts of dietary protein (all within normal intakes).

Eating Nuts = Better Cholesterol Levels

Consuming more nuts appears to be associated with improvements in blood cholesterol levels, according to a pooled analysis of data from 25 trials reported in the May 10 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

“Dietary interventions to lower blood cholesterol concentrations and to modify blood lipoprotein levels are the cornerstone of prevention and treatment plans for coronary heart disease,” the authors write as background information in the article.

More Left-Side Skin Cancer – From Driving

In a study appearing in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology a Saint Louis University doctor found that facial skin cancers were predominantly on the left-side, and especially in men.

“We tend to see more skin cancer on the left side of the face – drivers need to be aware of the amount of sun exposure they receive behind the wheel,” said Scott Fosko, M.D., chair of dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and co-author of the study.
